The members of the Trust are drawn from all walks of life. What unites them is the desire to celebrate the life of George Lansbury, and to carry on his pursuit of social equality and justice that he embraced with such passion for the people of the East End of London in the early part of the twentieth century.

Paul Augarde

Paul has 15+ years’ experience in housing & regeneration, currently running place strategy consultancy Augarde & Partners, previously at a number of housing associations across London. Whilst at Poplar HARCA in East London, Paul founded an award-winning team delivering community cohesion and enfranchisement through cultural, economic, environmental and community initiatives, including the Angela Lansbury Film Festival in partnership with the George Lansbury Memorial Trust.

Paul also helped set up the Mayor of London’s Creative Land Trust in 2019 and London’s Fashion District in 2018, he co-founded the Placemaking Collective UK, and is Chair of arts charity ACAVA.

Daniel Brambilla-Payne

Daniel Brambilla-Payne is an archivist and curator, and looks after the politics collections held at the Library of the London School of Economics and Political Sciences (LSE). These include the papers of George Lansbury and his son-in-law Raymond Postgate. He also helps manage the annual George Lansbury Memorial Lecture, currently hosted at LSE. Pippa Catterall (Chair)

Pippa helped found the George Lansbury Memorial Trust in 2012 and continues to serve as chair. She is Professor of History and Policy at the University of Westminster, co-editor of National Identities and a trustee of the Heritage of London Trust. Her many publications include The Free Churches and the Labour Party 1918-1939 (2016) and her current research focuses on the history of inclusion in public space.

Jay Dunstan BA (Hons) MA AFHEA

Jay has over 25 years of senior leadership experience in the cultural industries, with a career spanning broadcasting, advertising and global corporate communications. He is a PhD Doctoral Researcher at the University of East London, where his research critically interrogates employment flows into the creative sector. His research intersects with the Trust’s commitment to social justice and historical memory.

Dr Anne Kershen

Dr Anne Kershen is an Honorary Senior Research Fellow of Queen Mary University of London and is a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts. She has researched and published widely about the history of the East End of London, with a particular focus on its immigrant background. The history of Poplar and that of George Lansbury has been particularly relevant to her work.

Keith Murphy - Web Site Manager

Keith manages the website for the Trust. He first came into contact with the organisation shortly before the 2021 Centenary of the Poplar Rates Rebellion. His Great Uncle, Albert Baker, was among the Poplar Councillors who accompanied George Lansbury to Brixton Prison in 1921, establishing a personal and historical connection to the events commemorated by the Trust.

Chris Weavers

Chris Weavers lives in Tower Hamlets, where he chaired the local Labour Party for many years. He leads the campaigns and communications team for a major trade union, championing teachers’ rights and equality. With a strong passion for local history, he is developing plans to publish his first book.
